Eco Factor: Electric vehicle set off for the longest and greenest world tour.

After making news with his 18-month pioneering world tour in a solar-powered “taxi” two years ago, Swiss schoolteacher Louis Palmer is now organizing another tour to promote emissions free transport and November’s world climate conference. The UN-backed “Zero Race” will see electric vehicles from Australia, Germany and Switzerland set off on the longest and greenest round the world drive this Monday.

The plug-in electric vehicles that can travel at least 250 kilometers on a single charge will tour through Europe, Russia, China, Canada and the United States before heading back to Geneva in January 2011. There are plans for the Zero Race to take a halt at the World Climate Conference in Cancun, Mexico. In order to cover the trip through 16 countries, the Australian team TREV is using its plastic-bodied two-seat three wheeler, while the Switzerland’s Team Zerotracer set off in its stunning two-wheeler and the German team flaunts its Vectrix scooter.

The South Korean vehicle that failed to reach the start line at the United Nations in Geneva joined the three teams later in the day. Since running out petrol and the climate crisis both demand a greener alternative, this 80 days race is a great way to show the planet need renewable energy and clean mobility.
