World’s first commercially viable biomass enzyme from Genencor

biorefinery

The first ever commercially available biomass enzyme developed specially for second-generation biorefineries has been developed by Genencor. The enzyme, named Accellerase 1000, contains a potent complex of enzymes that reduce complex lignocellulosic biomass into fermentable sugar, an indispensable step for the production of cellulosic ethanol.

Interest in developing biomass enzymes arises from the urgency to reduce green house gas emission and at the same time to meet energy requirements from pollution free sources.

Genencor has been developing biomass enzymes for over ten years. They were supported in their effort by contracts with the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Accellerase 1000 is the first family of products suited to different biomass feed stocks and system conditions. It is expected to meet the large unmet requirement of biorefineries.
