Eco Factor: Innovatively designed wind farm harnesses wind energy to generate power.
New York-based design firm Atelier DNA has devised a wind farm concept with an aim to combine aesthetics with clean energy generation. Dubbed as Windstalk Farm, the concept envisions carbon fiber reinforced resin poles with integrated piezoelectric ceramic discs running the 55 meters (180 feet) high pole length. The piezoelectric disks get compressed generating electricity as and when the pole sways in the wind. Lending visual beauty to the farm are the LED lamps installed atop the poles that glow and dim relative to the amount of power generated.
To maximize wind energy generation the base of each pole would be fitted with torque generator to convert the kinetic energy of the swaying poles into electrical energy. The base would also house two large chambers for energy storage. The plan envisages Windstalks packed in tight arrays for maximum energy generation comparable to the conventional wind turbine arrangement. The concept recently clinched second prize in the Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) for Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City.
