White Zombie: The world’s fastest EV runs 150km on a single charge

World’s Quickest Electric Car

The most common myth about electric cars is related to their power and pick up. Every race junkie will tell you that although they would love to drive a greener car, but it is the addictiveness towards the power that makes them wary of change. A 1970 designed Datsun has put a break to all such theories. This 39 year old electric powered car has made history for being the fastest car in its category.

World’s Quickest Electric Car

With some modifications in its engine by American mechanic John Wayland, this retro flying machine can cover 0-60mph in 1.8 seconds. This was proven in a test race between Maserati and the 1973 Datsun 1200. Astonishingly, this car is faster than most of the sports car on the blacks today. The car, nicknamed as ‘White Zombie’, pushes the boundaries of shock and surprise even further; it can cover a staggering 150km without asking for a recharge. The five hundred horsepower makes sure that it can run 1/4th of a mile in just ten seconds.

The reason behind such beastly power is a custom built motor that replaces shell based design of the original. The motor consists of a dual armature and a 9 inch series wound. MR Wayland also made some ground breaking changes to the cell battery pack. He replaced the old system with the new 192 lithium polymer. This helps the car generate 22.7KWh of energy. The original design only allowed the Datsun 1200 to reach 60mph in 14.5 seconds with only 69HP.

The following video is a testimony of the fact that this car didn’t only beat Maserati, but is also faster than a Tesla roadster, which in turn takes just 3.9 seconds to cover the same distance which Datsun did in merely 1.8 seconds.

MR Wayland has found immense support and admiration for his feat. According to john, the car works on the prototype built for navy helicopters which costs around $100,000 or more. The idea of putting the car in mass production is still a dream as the batteries are too expensive. The car has opened up many lucrative options for John including a sponsorship. John Wayland has proved to the world that even a 1970 electric car can be our future.
