What are the Best Eco-cars to Buy?

When looking for a more eco-friendly car there are a number of factors you need to consider. Firstly, you don’t have to exclusively look at hybrid or pure electric cars; the technology and design that goes into modern engines can see you getting both excellent fuel economy, lower emissions and high performance that can result in a zero tax band. You need to think about what you will use your car for; for example, will it be a family vehicle, or a run-around? Are you likely to undertake the odd long journey? The final thing is how much you intend to spend.

If you are looking for something that drives well and offers decent MPG then there are some with extraordinary fuel economy available. This doesn’t mean you need to break the bank though; there are some great deals online in the used markets if you shop around. To point you in the right direction here are a few examples of the best eco-cars you can buy.

Renault Clio 1.5 dCiDynamique (2013)

This is an excellent choice for an inner-city driver thanks to its compact size and comfort. This particular Renault combines style with superb performance and handling, while at the same time the 1.5-litre engine can is good for motorway driving. The efficient diesel engine can give up to 88mpg and low C02 emissions of 83 g/km, so is definitely on the eco-friendly side.

Toyota Prius 1.8 VVTi T Spirit 5dr CVT Auto (2012)

While you don’t need to exclusively look at hybrids there’s a reason they are so popular, in particular the Prius. This automatic hatchback is a great family car, with superb fuel economy and performance, as well as being incredibly eco-conscious thanks to its hybrid engine technology.

Ford Fiesta 1.0T EcoBoost 125 Titanium 5-door (2013)

Ford Fiesta 2013 5 door

What might surprise you most about this seemingly small car is how quick it can be. The turbocharged 1.0 litre engine might sound like a contradiction but it can really pack a punch. Also the 5-door model can make this a good choice for a family car as well as a run-around. The further benefits are that it can offer you excellent Ford build quality and up to 66 Mpg, as well as an ‘A’ green rating.

Skoda Octavia Greenline III 1.6 TDI (2014)

If you are looking for a bigger hatchback for driving longer distances, then this Skoda is the ideal choice. Much like the name suggests this ‘Greenline’ model can offer 88mpg and thus low carbon emissions of 85 g/km, despite its 1.6-litre diesel engine. What this may lack in speed, it makes up for with driver comfort, lots of interior space and impressive fuel-efficiency over longer journeys.

Finally, if your car is likely to be used in urban areas over relatively short distances, electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf are now coming on to the used car market – with some very good deals to be done.  Such cars are going to become more acceptable as the number of charging points increases.  Even so, with zero emissions, running costs below 2p per mile, no London congestion charge and zero tax this is certainly an attractive option.
