Volkswagen not a novice anymore in electric car segment

volkswagen elektro caddy maxi

The leading automobile manufacturer and transportation giant, Volkswagen unveiled the prototype of Elektro Caddy Maxi, a new generation battery-powered compact van, at the world’s foremost technology event, Hannover Messe 2011. The company may release the final version within next two years in Hannover. This is an attempt on the part of Volkswagen to accomplish real-world assessment of CO2-free commercial vehicles as well as to promote electric mobility.

The Elektro Caddy is somewhat like the VW Golf in technology and the Ford Transit Connect Electric in looks. The prototype presented has three 3.3 kilowatt on-board chargers and provides a range of 68 miles. However, it is just a prototype and will be developed further as company has no plans to make it available commercially as of now. VW has manufactured only two Elektro Caddys yet. However, if demand for commercial electric vans sores, the company will be able to claim some experience in this segment of electric cars and vans.
