Solar water heating is common and as well as sterilizing mineral water. Tanzanian villagers have meticulously merged the two concepts to get eco-friendly. They have begun using an energy-saving method to sterilize their drinking water – leaving the water under the sun.
The piped water supply to Ndolela village in the central Iringa region is intermittent and it is not clean enough to drink even when it does flow. And when the pipes run dry, villagers get water from a dirty spring leaving the villagers suffering from stomach illness.
But, this new concept has helped them with their health. The plastic bottles are filled, the lids are put on, and then the bottles are put on black-painted roof where they stay for a whole day. Helped by the black roof, the solar radiation heats the water and destroys the bacteria which cause common water-borne diseases like cholera, typhoid, dysentery and diarrhoea.
