Tube City: A sustainable city within Delhi, the capital of India
The Tube City is a very innovative concept that has been designed by Abhinav Sharma, who tried to tackle the core issues such as migration, lack of employment, expensive housing etc. of every metropolitan city and here the project is focused on Delhi. This ambitious projects attempts to find a cleaning solution for the Yamuna River that has been neglected. A sustainable Tube City around the river throughout the city of Delhi will not only purify the water of the River but will also help it to be a sustainable mini city in its own right.
The Tube City will have it all – from farming areas and residential areas to commercial and office spaces and playgrounds. This project would address some of the basic infrastructure problems of Delhi. The 21 km long Tube City would provide food, housing, generate employment and even transportation in order to reduce the load on the main city without taking up any of the prime land – as the Tube City is constructed on the Yamuna River. Furthermore, a special mechanism would be employed across the length and breadth of the Tube City in order to prevent the pollution inside the Tube City.
The Tube City is designed to be dynamic that will keep on changing in functionality depending on the area. For instance, the outskirts of the Tube City would be primarily agrarian along with commercial spaces that would facilitate the wholesale trading of the produce/grains. As the Tube City progresses toward the main city, the agricultural areas would give way to more open areas and residential spaces and public parks. Deeper toward the center of Delhi, the functionality would change to commercial and office complexes. Hence, there would be a smooth transition of the functionality inside the Tube City from North Delhi to South Delhi spanning those 21 km of the Yamuna waters.
The Tube City will be horizontally layered in order to provide a self sufficient city with metro transit public parks and 160 lane highway for motor traffic. The water for all the functions of the Tube City will come from the Yamuna River through capillary action. There will also be a Pylon Grid with translucent photovoltaic panels for harnessing solar energy that would be utilized throughout the Tube City. There will be an optimum utilization of daylight in order to save energy.
