Trash-made Jellyfish Theater springs up in London

Eco Factor: 100-seat theater made using recycled materials.

The Jellyfish Theater, which we previewed last month, is the brainchild of designer Martin Kaltwasser and theater company Red Room, who wanted to make something sustainable and makeshift while reducing the amount of waste that goes into the landfills each day. The project, which was just a concept last month, has now taken the shape of a 100-seat theater that was formed as part of the London Festival of Architecture.

However, since construction is due for completion by 26th August, it will function as a true theater for three weeks after that. Being constructed at Bankside, the project began with a three week collection of discarded materials from companies all round London. Materials that have been deemed useless and are thrown out have been given a new life.

Board offcuts, dismantled poles and battens, rickety tables, freight palettes, old theater sets, empty plastic water-coolers and plastic bottles all find place in the new project. Construction is a DIY affair with six local volunteers offering their service.
