Eco Factor: Sustainable mixed-use development to reduce energy consumption.

Trahan Architects have unveiled their plans to convert an existing municipal dock in Louisiana into a mixed-use development that will be built following sustainable passive design principles. Originally designed as a dock that enabled ocean-going vessels to unload heavy cargo for upriver transport, the development will be replaced with a mixed-use facility consisting of residential units.

The building’s massing is shifted to provide optimal views of the river and gently arched to create a public space for exhibitions and social gatherings. The striking plan calls for the creation of wooden envelope that gracefully curves from north to south to provide shade to the residential units.

The meandering surface is articulated with wooden members that reduce direct heat gain, while allowing natural light to filter through. The reduction in solar gain promises a reduction in energy consumption as well.
