Toshiba’s new super batteries reduce toxic waste

toshiba announces rechargeable battery breakthroug

Batteries and plastic probably make up for the most of the pollution on the planet. While statement might be a bit too harsh to make considering the dangerous nature of many other toxic substances that we produce, one might feel it is a harsh statement to make. But the wide spread use of both these materials makes them probably the two substances that contribute the most to global pollution.

While replacing plastic might be a bit too difficult for all practical purposes, especially in a short period of time, it might be a more viable option to replace batteries. Toshiba is taking one such step towards that direction by designing batteries that last longer than normal. Toshiba calls these batteries Super Charge ion Batteries that last much longer than normal. These super batteries recharge from virtually no charge to 90% charge in a space of just 5 minutes.

The batteries have a lifetime of nearly 10 years, which is much more than any conventional batteries. The batteries last long which means that one does not need to replace them regularly. This implies that one adds less to the toxic waste pile each year. This invariably not only is great news for environment but also is great for the users. The super cells are already available in market, but Toshiba intends to direct them towards commercial and industrial sectors first. It wishes to later bring it to the household sector of the market. So if you are running an industry, then you can go pick one right now.
