The Belval Square Mile quarter in Luxembourg is about to experience a spectacularly ‘green’ revamp

The team of KCAP Architects and Planners and Topotek 1, in collaboration with financial advisors Fakton has won the competition for the strategic urban development and renewal of the Belval Square Mile quarter, with their all encompassing dictum of energy efficiency and sustainability.

The Belval Square Mile located in Esch-sur-Alzette, in Luxembourg is 170 hectares in area, and previously housed a blast furnace. Now according to the new design proposal this area will undergo a fervent ‘trial of green’ by incorporating mixed usage zoning for living, working and education along with a grandiosely conceived central sinter basin. This basin will include a bevy of sunken gardens that would emanate a sense of naturalistic splendor.

The new city quarter will integrate variant yet efficient types of spatial zones that would allow an increasing number of functions. With the theme of ‘industrial culture’, the buildings would imbue courtyards surrounded by spruced up apartments along with their flexible commercial spaces. When completed, this design proposition is seriously expected to facilely transform the face of Belval Square Mile.
