The award for the Greenest city of the world goes to – Dongtan in China

1 69
I did not realize how time flew from China’s population posing serious threats to its development and welfare to China taking up the onerous task of nation-building with utmost responsibility. And today, China is a power to reckon with and its progressive disposition is apparent in this current venture of building an eco-city. Dongtan, as it is called, is all set to take the crown for being the greenest city in the world of which the first phase will be complete by 2010 and by 2050 it is predicted to house half a million people.

Arup is the creative force behind these cities and they have rooted out problems like garbage and once there is absence of that one won’t need any landfills in this city. This can be done by aspiring to recycle and reuse 90 percent of the waste and ultimately become a zero-waste city. All the buildings and transportation will run on renewable energy, vehicles will be powered by batteries and waste will be considered as a resource with large-scale equipments like biomass plants and processing methods for energy recovery and composting of human sewage. The roof of every home will be green for better insulation and water taxis and hydrogen fuel-cell buses will assume the role of public transport.

Quite a plan, I must say! It is a precedent for others to follow and the way they channelize they resources, may be the word itself should be changed to ‘Chinalize’!
