Eco factor: Tzu Chi Foundation to keep disaster victims warm with blankets made from recycled bottles.

There is nothing nobler than helping those in need. And who could be the most needy if not the victims of the earthquake-devastated Haiti and the flood survivors in Pakistan? In order to offer a helping hand in this hour of need, a Taiwanese Buddhist charity is sending blankets to the homeless Haitians and will soon be dispatching them to Pakistan too.

What makes their initiative even more special is the fact that the blankets are a boon for the environment too, as they are made from recycled plastic bottles. These eco-friendly blankets are produced by thousands of volunteers who collect and sort plastic bottles at garbage yards and then wash them for further processing. The Tzu Chi Foundation, renowned for performing good works for those in need, has collaborated with Taiwanese textile factories to make these blankets.

This is not Tzu Chi’s first attempt to go green, in fact it has been producing a series of eco-friendly items, including shirts, scarfs and tote bags. Not only do these green blankets have a lower production cost, but they also contribute in a big way to reduce non-biodegradable garbage. The foundation also plans to dispatch food and medical supplies along with the eco-friendly blankets.
