Eco Factor: Sustainable skyscraper design for low-income city inhabitants.

Impoverishment of the cities and proliferation of slums with unhealthy living conditions is a major problem in all the developing nations. Aiming at turning the slums around to offer a better livelihood to the teeming millions lured by a better city life, Italian architects Diego D’Agostino and Enrica Papa have proposed a skyscraper for low-income inhabitants. The towering structure’s sustainable design not only minimizes the environmental impact but also ensures a decent standard of living for those barely eking out a livelihood.

The underlining design idea was to create customizable structure which could expand according to increase in number of residents. The structure would be a prefabricated steel frame assembled in stages using recyclable plastic and cardboard material. It would feature housing units and food producing green terraces as vertical farms and recreational areas. Most importantly, the building would be a temporary structure that could be dismantled and transported to areas according to population needs and economic fluctuations.
