Sun Tower – Concept today, necessity tomorrow!

sun tower

Michael Jantzen’s work is continuously gaining attention (to explore the possibilities of utilizing alternative energy systems in architecture). His latest concept pertains to a Sun Tower. The concept for the Sun Tower was inspired by some of the solar concentrating collector design and engineering done by the Pasadena California based Energy Innovations Corporation. The Sun Tower has adjustable mirrors at the top of the tower that focus sun light onto highly efficient photovoltaic cells (sunlight isconverted into electrical energy by these photovoltaic cells).

Electrical energy could then be stored in the structure for later use, and/or it could be sent out into the surrounding community. The tower also has a rain water reservoir beneath the structure. This water could also be used at the site and/or distributed wherever it is needed in the local community.

The concept is futuristic and gives us a faint glimpse of the future architecture. I think this is a great way to introduce people to these sustainable forms of energy and at the same time provide a contemporary place for people to get reconnected in a positive way.

These designs could become symbols for a new age of architecture in which buildings will not only produce their own energy, but also generate additional energy for others. Similar structures can prove helpful in introducing the whole idea of alternative energy production to the general public.

Thanks: Michael Jantzen
