Studio Weave gives new life to old boat by turning it into a floating cinema

The Floating Cinema was designed by Hackney architects, ‘Studio Weave’ and artists Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie. It found its way through the shipping canal of the Olympic hosting region of London last summer. This narrow boat featured a variety of exciting events like canal talks and workshops. It also offered film events for the spectators at the waterway, where they could watch unique films, which were selected specially for the Floating Cinema.

These Hackney architects renewed an old narrow boat, which was actually named “Cole” by the owners and was used initially for the community trips into this Floating Cinema that toured the watercourse of east London. The screen of the cinema is placed in the interior of the larger of the two enclosed quarters on the ship and is veiled with the help of dark curtains, which are specifically embellished into triangular pleats to make it extraordinary.

Twelve wooden seats, which are made from recycled oak tabletops are arranged in diverse positions in front of the screen and these can be folded and tucked away when they are not being used. A quilted canopy, which covers the deck outside the cinema is specially adorned with deco style graphics, which gives a relaxed touch to the hall making it comfortable for the visitors. The Floating Cinema in its three month season of screening toured many different locations around the boundaries of Hackney and Tower Hamlets, including a short tie up at “Folly for a Flyover”. It is presently positioned at Bow Locks and is basically used for personal trips.

This Floating Cinema will navigate the canal that connects Tower Hamlet and Hackney with the new Olympic park and in turn host various events and activities.
