Eco Factor: Specially designed glass helps reduce bird strikes.
Birds can’t see glass, and that is a major cause of avian fatalities around the world. A German company called Arnold Glass is now trying to save some birds by creating a glass called Ornilux. Inspired by spider webs, the glass carries a special ultraviolet reflective coating that makes Ornilux visible to birds, but doesn’t obstruct the view for us.
Similar to spider webs, which are made to keep birds from flying through and destroying them, the glass’ highly effective coating looks like a randomly unfolding layer that is barely visible to human eyes. The coating can reduce bird strikes by an estimated 75 percent and is also effective in insulating the building.
