Eco Factor: Solar cell achieves conversion efficiency of 39.2 percent.

Boeing’s subsidiary Spectrolab has developed new record-breaking solar cell, which achieves a conversion efficiency of 39.2 percent. The solar cells, dubbed C3MJ+, are the first with this kind of efficiency that will be mass produced. Until date, Spectrolab has reported efficiencies above 40 percent, but those cells achieved it in lab conditions.

The C3MJ+ is the first solar cell that achieves close to 40 percent efficiency in normal conditions. Boeing now hopes to transfer that success to the terrestrial solar cell market with the new high-efficiency solar cells, which are expected to be available from January.
