Spain’s Gemasolar thermosolar station generates power even during night

Spain’s famous thermosolar power station, the Gemasolar, produces power round the clock and the entire year. Whether it is night or daytime; a sunny day or a cloudy day, the Gemasolar generates energy, thanks to its advanced storage and energy gathering systems. The thermosolar station, which situates in the plains of Andalusia, features 2,600 solar mirrors with the entire build spreading out in 120 square meters.

Solar power station in Spain works at night

The Gemasolar has grabbed attention as a solar power station generating power day and night, alike. The station can produce energy several times higher than the current solar stations. Its technology is quite simple, a mirror like solar panel reflects sunrays to a tower at an intensity of 1000 times greater than when the sunrays hit the earth, claims Santago Arias, technical director of Torresol Energy that operates the solar station.

In fact, being a thermosolar project, solar energy from Gemasolar is not consumed as it is. Here the solar power is utilized for a special power production procedure. For this, the solar energy is first stored in a container filed with molten slat along with a temperature of over 500 degrees centigrade. The hot salt in the container is used to generate steam to run the turbines and thus to produce power.

Amazingly, the thermosolar station can generate 60 percent more power than a regular solar station thanks to its high tech storage capacity. As well, the station works more than 6000 hours a year when the conventional stations only work around 2,000 hours. The Gemasolar station can generate power required by 30,000 Spanish households a year.
