With the success of the New York-based Herkimer Diamond Mines KOA’s solar-powered cabin, co-founder Dr. Renee Scialdo Shevat decided to construct two additional cabins near it. With two more cabins coming up, the project has been named ‘Solar Kolony’.

The Solar Kolony being established in New York is not only an eco-friendly project but an educational venture too. Dr. Shevat’s aim is to impart education through adventure. The cabins constructed by Phoenix, Arizona-based Cavco Industries, are nearing completion and would be rented out to campers.

The cabins would get electric supply from solar panels. The ‘Solar Kolony’ is completely eco-friendly, down to the smallest aspect of its design. With a capacity of sleeping six, the cabins have bamboo flooring. Its earth-friendly features are enhanced with LED lighting, the use of recycled axles and tires, recycled lumber composite decking, on-demand water heating, and energy-efficient heating and air-conditioning. The structure stands unique as the design goes beyond the basic structural design. Even the bathroom products stacked for cleaning are environment friendly. The furniture is prepared from recycled milk jugs and recycled hickory wood. Arrangements have also been made for rain water collection with the right placement of storage tanks. Plans are in place to use the collected water for irrigating organic vegetable and a herb garden.

David Verner, the owner of Adirondack Renewable says that the idea behind the project is to make people realize what they consume and how it harms the environment. Other technicians along with Verner had discussed the planting of the batteries and were present at the camping location to establish the battery system which will help in their functioning. Verner claims that the battery shall provide five times the electricity than what was initially intended. He provided us with the required information explaining that New York doesn’t have a climate that is suitable for solar-powered houses. But the solar panels installed for the project will capture energy, even on cloudy days. The cost-efficient, energy-efficient and environment-friendly habitat structure would surely be successful in spreading the word on environmental awareness in a luxurious manner.
