Eco Factor– Zero energy house with lowest possible carbon foot print.
Building a zero energy house for cold and frigid climes of Finland with wide annual variations in sunlight is challenging and hard to attain. However, Team Finland from Aalto University successfully created and also won official entry into the first European Solar Decathlon for their “Luukku house.”
Inspired by traditional Finnish summerhouse, luukku, which means “a residence,” is made entirely from natural wood. The zero energy house with the lowest possible carbon footprint uses a combination of solar and insulation techniques to keep itself comfortably warm. The luukku’s domestic energy needs are met by 52m2 of photovoltaic panels, whereas the solar collectors on the roof ensure heated in-house water supply. The house uses ventilation heat exchanger to reduce the amount of energy. To keep the house properly insulated and prevent heat loss, the luukku uses bio-degradable wood fiber and low value argon filled glasses.
