Smog-eating cement to help cities stay pollution-free!

in the venice biennale 9

How would it be, if cities start cleaning up themselves automatically! Italian scientists have invented a ‘cement’ capable of eating smog, thus, will help cities clean themselves!

Venice — hardly falls in the list of most-polluted places in the world – has the Italian Pavilion of the architecture exhibition in the Venice Biennale giving some extra breath of fresh air. The secret lies on parts of the concrete walls and grounds of the building!

They have been built with cement that contain an active agent, which — in presence of light — breaks air pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, benzene, and others through a natural chemical process, photo-catalysis.

The technology is called TX Active. It has been under development for almost 10 years in the labs of Italcementi. Italcementi is the world’s fifth-biggest cement producer. Starting to be applied commercially to buildings and streets in Italy, France, Belgium, and elsewhere the cities will remain ‘green’ without demanding much effort on the civilians or the governments’ parts!

Though the photo-catalytic blocks cost about one-third more than usual paving, cost of using it to build your home will still be far less as it will eliminate the long-term cost of preventing air pollution.
