Shell installs a hydrogen fuel station in new York

YES, gasoline has the corner on the American car fuel market, but maybe not forever. Shell Hydrogen LLC and the City of White Plains, New York; have installed a hydrogen vehicle fueling station in the city’s department of public works. The fueling system is based on electrolysis technology that converts electrical energy and water into hydrogen fuel, to then be stored on-site and safely dispensed into clean and efficient hydrogen-fueled automobiles.

The advantage of hydrogen is that it can be generated from almost anything. So we can start by using natural gas while better/more efficient or cheaper production methods are developed.

Water electrolysis is the most eco-friendly method of generating hydrogen (in fact, the Shell Hydrogen facility in the article uses water electrolysis) – it simply splits water into hydrogen and oxygen, and the facility captures and stores the hydrogen. The problem is that it needs a lot of electricity as compared with the amount you get back in hydrogen.
