Eco Factor: Sustainable zero-energy submarine propelled by pedals.
The Scubster project was born from a collaboration between the EndlessFlyers association and two technology universities of Toulan (France) – SUPMECA et ISITV. The team aims to be the first French team to enter the next International Submarine Race, scheduled to take place in the USA in July 2011.
The team will design, build and test the French muscle-powered submarine taking inspiration from several human-powered systems that have been developed the world over. The competition takes place in the American military base of Bethesda and offers contestants to compete in two categories of races including Speed Race and Slalom and Maniability.
Designed to participate in the Maniability section, the objective of the Scubster is to achieve a speed of 10kph or more with optimal maneuverability. The submarine will offer faster cruising speeds when compared to a diver with flippers and extended submarine operation will be allowed by enhanced oxygen carrying capacity. Moreover, the surface navigation will allow the team to reach an exploration site.
Combining these elements, the Scubster will be an exploration tool for scuba divers and scientific research. Beyond the sport and technological challenge, the submarine aims to encourage people to protect the environment and use sustainable systems to protect the delicate ecosystem of the underwater world.
