Eco Factor: Environmentally friendly rechargeable batteries for military uses.

Scientists have developed new wearable lithium-ion batteries that are based on the use of a common virus. The high-performance rechargeable batteries could power portable electronic devices and can be woven into fabrics such as uniforms or ballistic vests.

The batteries feature cathodes made from an iron-fluoride material that and can provide power with minimal loss of performance compared to today’s rechargeable power sources. Using a virus, called M13 bacteriophage, the batteries are being claimed to be environmentally friendly. Moreover, the batteries produce less heat, which reduces flammability risks.
