S.African hotel uses ‘Earthorms’ to help slash its scrap food waste produced!

It is nice to eat out in big, plush hotels. But, what about the tons of scrap food left over after a gala party. Do you know the landfills across the world are overburdened with these scraps, which hugely contribute towards increasing global warming?

To tackle climate change happening in this process, the Cape Town’s oldest and most famous hotel — Mount Nelson hotel has equipped itself in a unique way. It has cultured a worm farm of its own, where thousands of earthworms guzzle metric tons of scrap food left over from the tables to help slash waste — quietly doing their bit to save the planet!

The worms — red wrigglers or tiger worms – are up to 15 cm (nearly 6 inches) long. They are kept in specially-designed crates, feeding on vegetable leftovers from the kitchen and pricey restaurant tables.

The fluid excrement of the worms — worm tea – is carefully harvested and used as fertilizer in the rolling gardens of the hotel. The other by-product of these worms – vermicast — is rich as compost.
