Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic Port aims to redefine conventional neighborhoods

Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic Port

We have conventional ideas of how neighbourhood should be designed, because our minds are trained to the ideas of houses, buildings, commercial complexes and a couple of parks and gardens thrown into the mix. However,JDS Architects and NE Arquitetura envision a different approach for Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic Port.

The schematics show the buildings to be ultra-modern and you can’t find fault in that. After all, it is a vision for the future. But the designs are a breed of architecture that we’ve never seen before. The buildings are tall and white and seem to be part of a jungle, but not a concrete jungle. It’s almost as though buildings have sprouted out of the Amazon with greenery growing within them.

It’s a fascinating concept, because each and every building seems to be interspersed with platforms that have miniature parks and gardens thrown into the mix. It means you don’t need to go three blocks away to get a taste of nature. The greenery is all around. The schematics are in their infancy but are incredibly detailed, showing exactly where and how the Olympic Port complex will be created.

It’s difficult to even envision a society like this, but then, fifty years ago, people would have found it difficult to imagine the architecture the way it is today. It’s evolution and we’ve just got a sneak preview of it.
