Eco Factor: Researchers use ultrasound to control the growth of harmful blue-green algae in waterways.

We are aware how fatal blue-green algae or cyanobacteria blooming in our water system could be. Not only can they cause ailment like headaches, stomach aches, fever, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, but could even take your lives. In order to deal with this ugly situation, researchers at Australia’s University of Adelaide have come up with a solution. The team claims that the blue-green algae can be controlled by using low frequency ultrasound.

Copper sulphate, the chemical compound presently used to eliminate the cyanobacteria could soon be replaced by low frequency ultrasound. The U of A team’s research showed that ultrasound works well to eradicate the algae, though the correct frequencies, amplitudes and duration for the most effective, economic and efficient process is yet to be found.

The researchers plan three-year collaboration with various Australian water industry organizations to move ahead with their study. They also mentioned that using high-frequency ultrasound would not be appropriate as it breaks down cyanobacteria’s cell walls by releasing their toxins into the water.
