Recycling the renewable: Old wind turbine turned into playground gear for kids

Wind Energy constitutes about one or two percent of the total energy produced on the planet and that is a pretty low number despite growing awareness regarding modern wind turbine designs. This story though is not about wind turbines a renewable source of energy but one of recycling at its creative best. Designers in Europe have taken a redundant wind turbine and turned its blades into the gear needed to build Wikado playground, which now sees kids having loads of fun on the once spinning blades.

Retired Wind Turbines Make For Fantastic Playground Equipment

The innovative idea came forth from 2012Architecten, who crafted various equipment like slides, seesaws, jungle net and climbing towers among many more. Of course, most of the sharp edges of the blades have been done away with and the blades of the wind turbine make for a perfectly cool slide thanks to its ultra smooth surface. There is even a water slide installed which allows the kids to freshen up a bit in the summer afternoons.

This is another wonderful example of how one can reuse and recycle material without throwing every piece of metal scrap into the landfill. We are sure many wind turbines need a replacement of blades each year across the globe and while we do not suggest people to mimic the playground exactly, maybe they can indeed put the blades to better use.

This is surely one of the most fun alternates that we have stumbled across so far. And if you just covered the playing surface of the turbines with piezoelectric tiles that produce energy on applying pressure, the retired turbine blades could end up producing more energy now than they ever did spinning around at an altitude, thanks to the hyper active kids.
