Racing Wood: A three wheeler crafted entirely out of wood

When your vehicle is named as ‘Racing Wood’, it becomes essential that the vehicle reflects the use of wood in every aspect. And that is exactly what three design students from HAWK University of Applied Sciences and Arts have done. The result of their efforts is a very cool three wheeled vehicle than can pack a punch with its electric battery and has won itself a few accolades in the process. The best part of this design is of course its sustainability and the fact that it does not leave huge piles of metal scrap once discarded.

Obviously the vehicle was designed for racing exhibition and it apparently won itself a jury and audience award at the ‘screwdriver race’ in 2011. The word ‘screwdriver’ obviously has more intoxicating connotations to some of us, but we will not really worry ourselves with cocktails at this point. Back to the Racing Wood and its design team consisted of Jirka Wolff, Andreas Heise Patsiaouras and Marcel Heise.

They initially started off with a working model that was made out of a steel frame to test the design of Racing Wood and the stability it would achieve. Once they were done with all the tweaks to the original blueprint and were happy with the balance of the vehicle, they started carving it out in wood. The entire project took them about ten weeks and the result speaks for itself. This wooden trike is a wonderful example of sustainable design that is powered by clean energy and with more design students, architects and engineers imbibing eco friendly outlook, one can expect more such designs.
