Purdue Solar Racing Team’s Celeritas prototype delivers 2,200 mpg

The Purdue Solar Racing team not only participated in the Shell ECO-Marathon but successfully demonstrated the latest technology in solar cars. The team worked for months to build the new urban commuter car or Celeritas prototype clearly demonstrating the viability of using vehicles powered by electricity for traveling fairly long distances in the near future.

Events such as the Shell ECO-Marathon encourage researchers and students to work on innovative and new technology application methods, which in the long run will benefit the environment. The objective is to create a pollution free environment and yet not compromise with present day urban commuting needs.

The Celeritas prototype is designed to accommodate a full size driver’s seat. The car is duly fitted with a trunk, headlights and taillights. The suspension is designed to handle roads with potholes and the rear view back-up cameras are state-of-the-art. In all, there are five computer systems inside the car. The amount of electricity that the whole system generated was mind-boggling, in fact, there was a danger of overloading the batteries on board.

The Purdue Solar Racing team headed by President Ted Pesyna from Indianapolis stated that his fellow students were more than pleased with the way their car performed at the event. Pesyna declared that the students are working on creating new versions with modified systems that will feature air-conditioning, passenger seats and more. The Purdue team members have made an application for a VIN number and license plate. The idea is to accord a legal status to the Celeritas prototype for running on the streets on an experimental basis.

Having won the urban division of the Shell Eco-marathon Americas, this urban-commuter solar car is a grand success and raises hope for a better tomorrow. The car actually achieved an equivalent of nearly 2,200 mpg. The Purdue racing Team members are more than excited to begin work on subsequent versions with advanced features. The success of this car is a clear indicator that the world will have a comfortable option to using fossil fuels. The direct effects of such a scenario is of course conservation of natural resources, optimum utilization of the abundant solar energy and a practically pollution free environment.
