Protohaus: A small mobile dwelling with ardently green credentials

Small is certainly beautiful, when it comes to Protohaus, a bantam, minimalist dwelling with an intrinsic quality of mobility. Mobile homes have always presented a cost effective side to housing, thus alluding to their ability to offer collective services to every social stratum. However, the designers in this case have kicked up a few notches, by imbuing that essence of visual pleasantness and green technology, to go along with this inherent low cost factor of the system.

Overseen by S. C. Holley Construction, the project completed in 2009, was the fruit of the effort of a series of collaborative workshops at Alfred University, which included students, faculty and various other departments. In fact, the attention to detail is epitomized by the group’s efficacious design criteria. They were based on the three pillars of eco architecture: sustainability, functionality, and aesthetics.

The scope of sustainability is quite easily understood in the case of Protohaus. Constructed mainly from recycled and reclaimed materials, the green credentials are also continued on the inside. These features include various types of fresh, grey, and black water systems, along with the off grid power generation systems involving wind and solar mechanisms.

Coming to the ambit of functionality, the 125 sq ft house as mentioned before is mobile in character. This means it can be transported from one place to another quite easily, with a trailer bed having the capacity to withstand 14,000 pounds. Thus, the mobility insinuates enhanced accessibility, and accessibility as we all know is directly related to the user’s convenience.

Finally arriving to the scope of aesthetics, the small dwelling does exude a graceful essence with those linear, unobtrusive patterns along the outer facades. Draped in a timber frame, it is the naturalistic vibe that manages to accentuate upon the design’s overall bucolic nature.
