Eco Factor: Researchers plan to clean lake water using micro-bubbles.
Researchers at the University of Utah have developed a process in which polluted water or soil is infused with pressurized ozone gas micro-bubbles to clean it. The bubbles are smaller than those in standard ozone aeration and are extremely effective in turning oil droplets into chemicals that can later be filtered out.
The technology is being applied to an extremely polluted lake in China. Lake Taihu, west of Shanghai and close of Wuxi, is full of industrial waste. The research team is working with Chinese environmental cleaning company Honde LLC to test the process.
The unique process has the potential to clean a range of pollutants which includes oil, MTBE, pharmaceuticals, polychlorinated biphenyls and heavy metals.
