Plenty of love for the planet from the city of brotherly love!

My first distinct memories in regards to Philly are attached to Will Smith and his ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’. Despite never having been to the city, I do feel kind of attached to it as I suppose I have watched too many flicks that have been centered on it; Philadelphia being the best of the lot. Now Philly is showing plenty of love towards the planet by going on a wonderful ‘Go Green’ campaign and it has really taken off with the city participating fervently in it.

Edina Tokodi was recently commissioned by SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) to encourage Philadelphia’s commuters to ‘Go Green’ with her navigable moss icons and green walls in the East Market Station’s passenger service area, ticketing area, and on the exterior of the station building and Transportation Museum. The initiative is part of SEPTA’s mission to help commuters become more aware of the positive environmental impact of using mass transit regularly. The project is now in full flow and looks quite beautiful and serene.

The ‘Go Green’ project took approximately one month of materials preparation. The installation’s opening coincided with the Philadelphia Flower Show, a popular time for increased traffic to and from the city. The artist and her collaborator, Jozsef Valyi-Toth, used “100% natural sheet moss”, turf-like plant matter grown explicitly for decoration and design purposes. Given that this material is already well-preserved, the exhibits’ pieces will remain green for at least a month and a half. It is a goal of the artist to soon employ bio-matter that requires dedicated watering, nurturing, and ongoing cultivation.

The initiative is really noble on the part of the city and it makes sure that no one misses the conversion to the green religion. It is something that many other cities across the US and the planet itself can take a look at and follow. It does not force people to change their ways, but inspires them with tranquil art that is sure to make an impact. It is just that one hopes it is a lasting one.
