Plankton: A natural indicator of quakes

phytoplankton blooms seen from space

Here is another indicator of earthquake – it is a natural one. It is prior to an earthquake; the concentrations of the natural pigment chlorophyll in coastal waters have been shown to rise. This is revealed by a joint US-Indian team of researchers, who analyzed satellite data on ocean coastal areas that lie near the epicenters of four recent quakes.

If peaks in chlorophyll are monitored continuously, it could provide early information on an impending earthquake, according to the researchers. Prior to an earthquake, thermal energy is released, which lead to the chlorophyll’s bloom, they further explain.
