Eco Factor: Supermarket proposal will grow food onsite to reduce emissions.

Usually in a supermarket food items are transported from hundreds of miles away before they are sold to the end consumers. Rotterdam-based firm Van Bergen Kolpa Architects are trying to reduce emissions related to transportation of food items by designing a supermarket, where all food items are cultivated onsite.

Dubbed the Park Supermarket, the development will serve as a park with the green areas used for cultivating and harvesting food items. To be developed at the Metropolitant parks of the Randstad, various departments in the supermarket will have a dedicated area of 1 hectare, where the department can grow food items.

The supermarket will have departments for rice, fish, meat, fruits, vegetables and more. Insulated water spray roofs and floor heating through thermal warmth support the climate for growing food items.
