Now it is the turn of death to get eco-friendly!

Remember the famous song of Eagles ‘Dust in the wind’? I do tend to listen to the song once in a while, especially when I feel that my head is in the clouds a bit too much. The lyrics kind of tend to give you a dose of reality in a plain and simple way. They remind you that irrespective of your origin or your current life, you inevitably end up being just dust and nothing more. But then putting the dead to rest is not always that simple. Some of us cremate our dead, while others bury them. Now people across the planet are becoming more and more conscious about the choice they wish to make.

For long, burying someone has been said to be not very eco friendly with formaldehyde embalming, cement vaults, chemical lawn treatments or laminated caskets. This actually does more harm to the soil than good. To replace this, people now are turning towards Biodegradable coffins are part of a larger trend toward “natural” burials. While this is nothing new in UK and other parts of Europe, the trend is just starting to catch up in the US.

In case of those who are going for an eco friendly funeral then options range from natural-fiber shrouds to fair-trade bamboo caskets lined with unbleached cotton. There are also more traditional-looking handcrafted coffins made of wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. While some people I know find it very depressing to talk about death, I find it funny that people shy away from what is inevitability. While this does not mean that you spend better part of your day planning your last ride, it would not hurt, if you gave back to the planet what is basically its property.

Every particle is the universe is intertwined with every other in the universe. Energy derived is also from these very particles. We are hence a part of not just the planet, but the entire Universe. If an eco friendly funeral helps you sustain a giant tree, what more could you ask for? It is the glorious cycle of life and death in action. Some can call it philosophy, for me it just remains physics.
