New ‘Whole Trade Guarantee’ label to certify sustainable products

Very soon a new Whole Trade Guarantee label will be used to mark ethically sourced products. But, to carry the new label, the products have to meet strict requirements like that related to quality, wages and working conditions, and most importantly, environmental practices.

But, what will they get in exchange? The ‘Whole Foods’ will pay a higher price for the goods. Thus, it will help encourage and assure smart and sustainable production even in the in the developing world.

John Mackey, Whole Foods co-founder and CEO said,

With our shoppers’ growing concern about ethical and responsible trade and with our company’s increasing scale and scope, the time is right for Whole Foods Market to help make more of an impact.

It is in conjuction with TransFair USA; the Whole Foods announced the program. The TransFair USA certifies the products of Fair Trade in the United States. And the Rainforest Alliance that promotes environmental stewardship is a nonprofit working with landowners and businesses.
