New software to predict a Tsunami faster

new software to predict a tsunami faster

Till now, it is not possible to send tsunami warnings accurately until the waves are recorded by buoys! Here is a new solution to this.

A new software is developed, which coupled with Global Positioning System’s data could determine quickly if a large earthquake will generate a tsunami across the ocean! This new system can detect shifts in the seafloor.

The new technology is called ‘GPS displacement’. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has developed it. The technology measures when radio signals from GPS satellites arrive at ground stations. With the help of these data, scientists can calculate how far the quake moved the stations. This helps them to derive the true size of the quake — called its ‘moment magnitude.’
