New ‘Ocean forecast system’ to predict ocean weather up to a week in advance!

csiroNow, the ocean currents, temperature and salinity can be predicted up to a week in advance! That is really a convenient period for the authorities to take necessary precautionary actions. The CSIRO and the Australian Navy have jointly developed a new forecasting system to take all these readings.

And, to develop the modeling system, the scientists gathered the information using the existing remote sensing data, Dr Andreas Schiller from the CSIRO says.

Dr Schiller said,

We are gathering information from the ocean in terms of satellite observations or remote sensing and also in situ observations with robotic floats… These observations are used to constrain observation models which then enable us to forecast the ocean conditions up to seven days in advance.
