Jetting out like a gigantic vase from the surface of the earth, this structure is actually a design that has won the International Design Competition for a new observatory. From here you can safely gaze upon the closest star and also enjoy the views of the celestial objects as you take in the glittering skyline too. While the observation tower will have an interior deck and roof top viewing space, the final design aims to be entirely carbon neutral when complete. Many more images follow…..
Duggan Morris Architects have designed the new Mersey Observatory in Crosby after seeing off competition from Studio 8, Phos Architects, Farrell & Clark, and Ellis Williams Architects.
The competition sought a design to replace the disused radar tower, which stands between Liverpool Docks and Crosby Beach that would attract up to 250,000 visitors a year.
The project, part of the ongoing regeneration of the area, will offer views of both Liverpool’s skyline and Antony Gormley’s famous installation, Another Place, which consists of 100 iron figures on Crosby Beach.
