New battery technology for electric cars and other EVs

NTS Works Inc referring to company initials Neal Tate Saiki, originator of Zero Motorcycles Inc – the prominent electric motorcycle company has disclosed information related to the innovative electric vehicle (EV) battery technology. Post retirement from Zero Motorcycles last year, Neal founded a new company in California, based in Santa Cruz. This company centers around technological developments. The new battery launched will help Electric Vehicles to multiply their sales by two folds at the current costs. This will be an important milestone for the consumers who want to utilize full potential of their EVs.

As if now sales of these vehicles is slow moving, due to their high costs and limited range. Addressing these shortcomings, the new battery is based on a technology that helps in linking exceptionally high energy lithium ion battery-operated cells meant for EVS into longer sized battery packs. Although such battery cells have existed in the market, it hasn’t been a cost effective technique to link them together without overheating them. The battery pack from NTS Works is made of small cylinder-shaped lithium ion cells. These are called as 18650 cells. They were initially designed for laptops but the identical shape and size has become a hit in the lithium battery industry. Since these lithium ions 18650 cells are light weight and cost effective, everyone has always wanted to use them.

The idea of connecting the cells together was based on mechanically connecting cells together with pressure. But the major limitation of this technology is not suitable for high powered bursts of energy. Therefore these cells cannot be utilized for high performance vehicles. But this technology is suitable for EVs like scooters and motorcycles – when a consumer wants to ride them for at least an hour or for electric cars.

    I held a number of speed records racing radio controlled, 1/10 scale dragsters. All my cars featured 10 or 20 cell NiCad packs held together with nothing more than a piece of piano wire and a tiny turnbuckle.
    The secret is to lap the cells, it doesn’t take much but they will conduct 100 amp bursts. I used the same set up in a combat robot (Crocbot) so I’m sure road abuse will not be a problem for a pack joined in this manner.
    There in no vehicle more demanding of high amperage bursts than an electric drag racer. My competition soldered all their connections, I still won a lot.
