Neon hotel indicator made out of recycled street signs

The historical industrial building that housed the Weidmann Cooperage since 1901 will soon culminate into a prestigious hotel and will be open for public from 1st of May, 2012. Apart from the preservation and renovation of the old brick building, it will be installed with a new 50 foot tall marquee framed with red neon signage that reads ‘HOTEL’. The interesting fact about the neon installation is that it has been entirely crafted using old and discarded street signs from New York.

neon HOTEL indicator

This creation is the brainchild of a New York based artist, Tom Fruin, who feels that by using old and worn out street signs he has discovered the variety as well as the spontaneity of the New York’s streetscape and how it can be used for transforming into a neon light that will adorn a vintage hotel by the name of Wythe Hotel.

The raw material that he collected comprised of hand painted fruit and pizza advertisements, air conditioning repair advertisements, phone numbers and many other similar items. These were collected from all over the town, including, warehouses, demolished pizza plazas, etc.

Signage is an important promotional means for companies and hotels. They must have prominence and also suit the budget, besides being eco friendly. This red neon vertical signage outside the hotel building is undoubtedly an eye catcher and yes without spending too much the Wythe hotel authorities have been able to dominate the space without harming the environment.
