Natural Evolution by Splinakis Ship Design adopts sustainability

natural evolution 1

Natural Evolution by Splinakis Ship Design, is a green follow up to the company’s series of smaller yachts after Natural Design. The new 52 meter yacht is powered by a diesel electric propulsion system and includes fabulously-designed natural interiors by JiWon Sung. The designers at Splinakis Ship Design explain that the yacht gets powered by two Schottel STP 440 propellers, giving a maximum speed of 14 knots. The propellers will be connected to an electric motor and it would also be possible to install the larger STP 550 model, to take the max speed up to 16.5 knots, by extending the hull slightly.

The designers state that they investigated two least polluting options for generating power onboard, when the vessel is at port or in some coastal location. The first of these options was to use standard diesel electric system with two back-up batteries that gives around 4 hours of cruising time at 4 to 5 knots when run on electric motor. The second option was to use a small Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) generator connected with customized LNG tank which can allow vessel to cruise at the same speed but for up to 40 hours. The difference between the maximum instant speeds between the two options will be just 0.2 knots over a short period of 40 hours which then increases to 0.5 knots thereafter, due to the 250KW difference between the configurations of the two diesel generators.

Despite of the smaller size proper attention has been paid to the floor design and interiors. Moreover, eight guests can be easily accommodated in four double suits, of 20 sq. meter space each, fitted at the aft of the vessel. Three double crew cabins are located at lower desk with captain’s cabin on the upper desk. The main desk is loaded with a bar, a dining area and a salon while the sauna is on the upper deck, which also includes an additional covered dining area. Finally, following the company’s policy to keep as much open space as possible, a Jacuzzi with an open bar area has been incorporated on the fly deck.
