Living the eco-friendly lifestyle is a great idea, true. But, it must sooth your purse too. And we are of the idea that it’s an expansive craze. But far from the idea, mainstream manufacturers are jumping on the green bandwagon. Showcasing all manner of recycled or sustainable building materials, Sunset magazine recently opened the doors to its latest Idea Houses. It show such normally hidden features as formaldehyde-free insulation, radiant roof barriers and the various engineered wood products used in construction. Called “zero-energy” houses because they produce as much energy as they consume, the two-story structures in located at a new east Menlo Park, California.

Every item and product in each of this eco-friendly, energy-efficient house is readily available in today’s marketplace – it may be from the tankless, on-demand water heaters to the solar roof tiles to the satellite-linked automatic sprinkler system. The six-acre development eventually claims to feature 47 zero-energy houses and a park. Twenty of the houses will be sold in a lottery to qualified Menlo Park residents as ‘affordable’ $375,000 or less!
