Metabolic Stress Disinfection: Non-toxic Pest control

Manuel Lagunas-Solar and his team at University of California, Davis (Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture DOI) has developed a non-toxic technique to keep your fruits and vegetables fresh. Called the Metabolic Stress Disinfection (MSDD), this technology kills insects on fruit and vegetables by subjecting it to alternating vacuum and carbon dioxide, which suffocates organisms. It also uses Ethanol gas to kill fungi and bacteria.

Time Essert, Principle Electronics Engineer on the project, told Chemistry & Industry:

The initial hardware cost of an MSDD system is higher than methyl bromide, but the cost of chemicals is much cheaper, so that eventually it would pay for itself.

The best part about MSSD is that the gases can be recovered and recycled and it could also help realize Methyl Bromide elimination in pesticides, set forth by Montreal Doctrine.
