Giancarlo Zema is an Italian architect renowned for his specialized architectural designs. He has his own architecture studio in Rome, Giancarlo Zema Design Group which specializes in semi-submerged architectural structures, floating habitats and yacht design.

He has designed a giant leaf-like structure, the ‘Lotus’ sponsored by LumineXence of Bergamo. This project is much desired as a pilot project for municipalities like ‘green’ Lombardi.

The project features a single tube-shaped element forming a graceful and strong structure. It is constructed with standardized units allowing flexibility and the modular system gives it a life force. This structure provides shelter from rain, lights up the environment and can produce energy from a solution under a single leaf. The single leaf can be extended up to a maximum capacity of seven leaves with a total photovoltaic surface area of 32sqm. This seating structure can be used in parks and rest areas.
