I have always adored Ikea for it innovative environmentally friendly designs and its commitment towards it always. When I recently went to Ikea store in New Jersey, I really wondered why we don’t have one in India. Its amazing low prices along with pro-environmental goods (they are always easy to carry as well, flat packed so that one could carry the product easily, although not on the buses they run!) drove me crazy. And when I read that they now have initiated bikes with trailers, it was more than a surprise.
A survey in Copenhagen found that nearly 20% of its customers arrived by bikes, travelling as much as 10-20 kilometres from the commercial centres to the outskirts of the city where Ikea of Denmark is located. So, it has actually started free bicycle hiring scheme, with Velorbis bicycles and trailers.So one could actually borrow a cycle and a trailer and take goods home, may be not a sofa but a good stock of other things, almost for free. The test driving is soon to happen and if all goes well, the idea will be experimented in other cycle friendly countries as well. It surely sounds like a good scheme, because taxi is not always a good way to take heavy good back home and driving is killing, especially with petrol prices hiking every other day. This seems like a good scheme that I am going to look forward to. And when I do ride the new bike with trailer, I would definitely write about the experience.
