LEAF concept converts atmospheric dew into potable water

Potable safe water is still a far fetched dream for many people in developing and underdeveloped nations. In rural areas of these countries circumstances are even tougher where womenfolk walk 8-10 miles each day to fetch a pot of water for the family. Despite efforts to alleviate these sordid conditions, things are still taking time. In such a situation if someone comes up with an idea of generating clean potable water at a cost effective manner than such an innovation is like breath of a fresh air. Anurag Sardana – an innovator and a creative mind has come up with a low cost product that will help in generating water in a cost effective manner with his innovation called LEAF.

The product is named as ‘Leaf’ since the mechanism of this product is inspired by the shape of a leaf. Entire structure is around 18 feet tall and easy to deal with. Leaf is a self-generating water resource which works in the same way as dew drops are formed on natural leaves. Basically, there are four components in this equipment – solar panel, charge controller, rechargeable battery and a thermoelectric module. All these parts work well in conjunction to create water. There is a huge metallic surface in the shape of a leave on the top of this apparatus. Dew drops on this man made leaf is formed by the process of condensation. The condensation process takes place with the help of solar energy generated by attached solar panel. These drops then get collected in the attached earthen pot. This water then gets purified by a filter and sand as at the bottom of it there is a layer of sand, and the collected water slowly trickles into the heap of sand and gets percolated.

This entire system is hassle free and it does not require high maintenance. The filter needs to be cleaned time to time so that it does not get clogged with dirt and sand. Through this process, one equipment can collect as much as 20 liters of water per day.
